Deuteronomy 8:7-18

Amplified Bible (AMP)

7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;

    8A land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey;

    9A land in which you shall eat food without shortage and lack nothing in it; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.

    10When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for all the good land which He has given you.

    11Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His precepts, and His statutes which I command you today,

    12Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses and live in them,

    13And when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all you have is multiplied,

    14Then your [minds and] hearts be lifted up and you forget the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage,

    15Who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, but Who brought you forth water out of the flinty rock,

    16Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

    17And beware lest you say in your [mind and] heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.

    18But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Thinking I had  finished my blog on Deuteronomy 8:1-6, I opened my daily devotional book today, wondering what I would read. I knew God would have something for me, but I wondered if He had something for the blog.

I chuckled as the scripture verses for today in my devotional registered in my brain.  Deuteronomy 8:7-18.  Apparently, I am not finished in Deuteronomy.

It is these kinds of moments that bring home to me the reality of God in my life.  I hadn’t offered up a formal prayer.  I was merely speculating and pondering what might be next.  But God knew the question before it was asked.  If you ever for a moment think that these kinds of occurrences are coincidence in your life, don’t!  These reminders demonstrate how intimately involved God is and wants to be in every area of our lives.  God had today planned before I was born.  It is no coincidence that the devotional reading for today’s date is a continuation of the things I have been studying on my own for the last week.  It is all part of God’s plan.

 So what does God have for us in Deuteronomy 8:7-18?

Don’t look at where you have been; look at where you’re going.  Don’t look back.  Keep your eyes forward.  We have all heard these expressions.  The idea is that we can’t change anything in our past, and if we keep looking back on our mistakes, we will miss the things coming to us because our eyes are not on the goal.

But in these verses of scripture, God is telling us over and over to look back.  To remember.  The difference is we are not remembering what we have done or where we have been, but we are remembering how far we have come and what God has accomplished to bring us through.  God tells us to remember all the things He did for us while we were in the wilderness. There is quite a list there.  He brought us out of Egypt and bondage through a wilderness, saved us from fiery serpents and scorpions, provided water in the desert, and fed us with manna.

Then He brings us to the Promised Land and says, “Here it is!  The abundance I promised.  There is nothing lacking here.  You have everything you need and desire.  Enjoy it.  Eat your until you are full. Build your beautiful homes, live in them and grow your wealth in both possessions and money.  And your heart will be “lifted up.”  You will have a light heart.  You will be happy.”

Then again in verses 11-18, He tells us to remember by saying, “Beware you do not forget.”  Don’t forget what I did for you.  Don’t deceive yourselves into believing that you have done all of this yourselves.  Remember, “God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth.”  And He does this because of His Word, which He remembers, His promise to your fathers.  The covenant He made with Abraham way back in Genesis.  And God cannot break His covenant.  So, He has brought you here to the Land of Promise.

So remember Him and all His works, and thank Him today for the many blessings we have found in His Promised Land!

Until next time…
